Uniqueness: Traditional red leaf spinach valued across Tamil Nadu for its robust flavor and deep-colored leaves; high in iron, beta-carotene and dietary fiber—excellent for poriyal and rasam.

How to grow:

- Best soil: fertile loam with generous compost; well-draining.

- Sunscreen: partial shade to full sun (3–6 hours); tolerates hotter sites if watered.

- Watering: consistent moisture for tender leaves; more frequent watering during dry spells.

- Nutrients: organic manure at planting and weekly liquid feed for fast leaf growth.

- Companion plants: plant near tomatoes and chillies to maximize space; marigolds to deter pests.

- Care tips: harvest outer leaves frequently; avoid allowing plants to bolt by regular cutting.
