Red Corn

Uniqueness: Tamil Nadu heirloom red corn with sweet, nutty flavour and striking red kernels; good source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, antioxidants (anthocyanins) and B vitamins. Ideal for roasting, flour and ornamental use.

How to grow:

- Best soil: deep, well-drained loamy soil rich in compost; pH 6.0–7.0. 

- Sunscreen: full sun, 6–8 hours daily for strong stalks and grain fill. 

- Watering: regular deep watering, especially at tassel and kernel-fill stages; avoid water stress. 

- Nutrients: side-dress with nitrogen when plants are knee-high; phosphorus at planting and potassium during grain fill. 

- Companion plants: plant with beans (three sisters method) for natural support and nitrogen fixation. 

- Care tips: ensure good spacing (60–75 cm rows) for airflow, remove rogue seedlings to avoid cross-pollination if purity matters.
